Liberation
Towards the end of 1944, Allied forces were making considerable
progress deep into German-occupied territory and Germany itself. Russian troops
were the first to discover the extent of the Nazi atrocities when they liberated
camps in Poland in late 1944.
By early 1945, British and American troops were pressing into Germany from the
West, and made swift advances throughout March.
On 11 April 1945, American forces discovered the concentration camp at Buchenwald
and found things worse than they had seen throughout the whole war.
