Here
is a passport belonging to Olga Reiss. We can tell a lot from this type of artefact.
The Red 'J' printed on the passport showed what German passports issued to Jews
were like, and Olga Reiss's middle name 'Sara' shows how Jewish people were
forced to change their middle names, Israel for men and Sara for the women.
This came into force on the 17 of August 1938. Passports could also be used
to trace the journey of people at the time; many Jews moved from one place to
another, in an attempt to escape the racial state.
