There were a number of groups of victims in Nazi Germany. Any group which did not conform to the Nazi ideal was persecuted. These included opponents of the Nazi regime, Gypsies, Homosexuals, and a variety of groups considered less than human by the Nazis. But it was the Jews who were to become the main target of Hitler's racial state. The result was perhaps the most devastating and organised policy of mass murder ever known, in which millions of people died, not because of what they believed, nor what they did, nor what they said, but simply because they were Jews.
