For Jewish
people the tragedy of the Holocaust is overwhelming. The exact numbers of
victims are difficult to know; however we do know that in the region of six
million Jewish people were murdered, including over 1,500,000 children. It
is sometimes difficult to imagine that a whole civilisation was virtually
wiped out by the Nazis. Many of the people who were murdered have neither
graves nor memorials. In many cases there are not even any surviving members
of their families to remember them. It is important to create places where
these events, and particularly the victims, can be remembered with respect.
