An article in the Weimar Constitution that helped Hitler to gain power by lawful means. The Constitution of the democratic Weimar Republic was actually very advanced, but Article 48 was a weakness. It gave the Reich President the power to temporarily suspend the rights of German citizens, for instance during a political crisis.
