Concentration camps are guarded prison camps in which prisoners are held. There were different types of camp for different purposes but the system developed and centred around the concentration camps which were initially established to hold political prisoners. Although the Nazis developed the most extensive and cruel network of camps they were not the first nor the last to use them.
