A member of the Catholic Centre Party from 1921, in 1932 Franz Von Papen was appointed Chancellor. In the Reichstag elections that November he failed to secure an overall majority. Working with the Nazis and thinking he could use them, Von Papen quickly became a Nazi tool. Narrowly escaping inclusion in the hit list of 'Night of the Long Knives,' he was made ambassador to Austria, where he worked for Anschluss, undermining Austrian Chancellor Von Schushnigg.
