The process whereby new arrivals at Auschwitz and Majdanek were divided into those that may be able to work for a short time and those that would be taken straight to the gas chamber to be killed. Usually around 75 percent were selected to be murdered. The rest were taken as slave labourers and worked to death. Further selections took place of prisoners who had been in the camps for sometime to take away those considered unfit to work, or of those in the so-called 'hospital' barracks in the camps.
