Saar

A district of around 1,000 square miles between France and Germany, populated by ethnic Germans. After the First World War it was administered by the League of Nations. The coal mining industry came under French control as repayment for the damage to the French mines during the war. In 1935, the population decided in a plebiscite to return to Germany. By then the Nazis had already been in power for two years.
